A captivating performance combining music, puppetry, storytelling, and magic, perfectly aligned with this summer’s reading theme: Color Our World: Colorea Nuestro Mundo!
This engaging show explores the science, creativity, and joy that illustrations bring to our reading experience. David Black draws from a diverse palette of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and bilingual children’s literature to inspire readers to look beyond words and appreciate the richness of printed stories.
“After seeing David’s show several times, I can say it is interactive, fun, and has unexpected surprises for children and adults that make it easy to watch again and again.”
Show Highlights
Kicking things off, David serenades the audience with the beloved Spanish folk song, De Colores. He conjures a vibrant rainbow of scarves from an empty paint can and then coaxes beautiful flowers (hermosas flores) to bloom, brightening the stage before transforming those scarves into a magnificent six-foot canvas bursting with de colores!
David invites the audience to help him jazz up his Colossal Magic Book with a few hilarious hiccups along the way. Sharing the book Color by Ruth Heller, he unveils the behind-the-scenes wizardry of S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art & math) that makes book printing possible. Watch as he magically mixes yellow, magenta, cyan, and black to instantly print a picture!
Two lucky helpers join David for a playful game involving colorful scarves. Everyone gets to flex their Spanish language skills as they say each scarf color, and then—surprise!—the scarves swirl together to form a dazzling arcoíris (rainbow)!
Pico, the adorable Portuguese water dog puppet, teams up with David on a quest for his most “prized possession.” Following his nose, Pico dives right in and triumphantly unearths his library card!
Meet Art Dog, the charming creation of artist and author Thatcher Hurd, who’s on a mission to sniff out the fake painting in the Dogopolis Museum of Art! Is it a masterpiece by Vincent Van Dog, Pablo Poodle, Henri Muttisse, or Leonardo Dog Vinci? David invites a young volunteer to step into the paws of Art Dog, the elusive artist leaving tail-splatted masterpieces in Dogopolis!
Is it true that You Can’t Take a Balloon Into the Museum of Fine Arts? According to this whimsical book illustrated by Jaquelin Preiss Weitzman and Robin Preiss Glasser, it might not be allowed inside, but that green balloon is having a blast floating all around Boston. Just when you think it’s gone, that balloon pops back to life and joins David for a magical interlude!
As our enchanting program draws to a close, a special treat awaits. David recounts the delightful story of Paletero Man, a bilingual gem penned by Lucky Diaz and illustrated by Micah Player, celebrating icy delights and the warmth of community, all wrapped in an entertaining magical twist.
